Chapter One
It had been almost two years since the fire. The investigators
told Clair that a light bulb must of sparked and caught something on fire. This
should have been a good explanation as an accident, but this drove Clair mad.
She had left the light on she told her self. I killed my family. At the thought of this haunting her, she became
madder and madder. She started to say things, no person should say. She would
tell people that she knew their past and their future. Clair was moved from
house to house, guardian to guardian. Some called her the maddest child of
Kingstone or even West Yorkshire and when she was really raving, the maddest
girl of England. She was soon moved to asylums and was treated like dirt. It
was only when the people of Kingstone found a place for her at a boarding
school that opened up in a town called Birchstone.
It was called Birchstone Boarding School for Troubled Minds. There,
Clair meet her roommate, Drake. Drake was tall and had dark brown hair and blue
eyes. He was kind to Clair, and understood her when she babbled. Drake told
Clair that he came to Birchstone because he could see thing others could not
and told the world about it. Clair and Drake had a doctor who was to look after
them. His name was Doctor J. Kenneth. Doctor Kenneth was in his late 40s. He
had an upturned nose, grey hair and odd eyes, the left eye was hazel and the
right eye was light blue. He limped on his left leg and had a dry tone of
voice. Doctor Kenneth tried and tried to make Clair forget about the fire, but
even when Clair tried to, she could still hear the screaming of her family’s
voices, calling out for her blood.
“Constraint Clair. Try to forget. When you forget, your pain shall
leave you. You will be free. Try Clair, try…” Doctor Kenneth session had begun.
“I’m trying, I’m… I’m… Annie!” Clair opened her eyes as she awoke from the
nightmare she was having. Drake looked up to meet her eyes. He’s been crying. Thought Clair. He must have asked the doctor to stop again,
Oh Drake… It’s all my fault. It’s all my fault.
“Well, I believe that will be enough for today. You two may go…Oh,
yes Clair, Drake, would you two go and get some of the sleeping pills, we
presently run out.”
“Yes sir, we will go right away sir.” Said Clair.
“Are you sure, you should come with us?” asked Drake,
“Yes, I am quite sure you are capable of going down to the drug
store. Here are $20 to get the pills, and here is my prescription.” He handed
the money to Drake and the piece of paper to Clair and hurried them put the
door.

The bells on the door rang loud and clear when Drake and Clair
entered the drug store. Clair went straight to the pills as Drake stared off
into the distance. Clair got the “Sleepless Knights” pills. “These ones please
sir.” Said Clair handing her the pills and the prescription. “That would be
$20,” said the shop owner. Drake gave him the money. The shop owner looked at
Clair suspiciously. “Aren’t you that, that crazy girl, who told people their
past and future?” he asked. Clair clenched her fists and her knuckles turned
whiter than her pale skin.
“No, she’s not. She is still in West Yorkshire.” Drake said
angrily walking over to the till. He looked behind him and nodded as though he
was talking to some one there.
“Um, well… Have a good day.” He said as Drake and Clair walked out
of the store.
* * *
“Drake… You know about the fire that burned my house and killed my
family.” Drake nodded looking into the distance,
“Well, I’m starting to think that I… I didn’t start the fire.”
“That’s good.” He said, “I
always thought that your guilt was just all in your head. That the fire was all
an accident.” Drake pointed at Clair’s head and smiled.
Drake didn’t smile much. He was always so straight faced at
Birchstone. He said he stopped smiling when people started to call him a mad
man and a fool. Clair shook her head.
“All fires are started by some one on purpose. My third mother told me that.” Clair told him. “I
feel that there is something I missing and that if I just had all the clues in
front of me, I would be able to see it. The problem is, Doctor Kenneth says
going back to my home would only set back my medication and he doesn’t want
that.” Drake frowned
“Yes we could do that” He started. “But what about if we…”
“I’m sorry, but who are
you talking to?” Clair asked.
“Sari, the… Oh, right.” Drake said, remembering that she couldn’t see
whom he was talking to.
“Well we’re… I was thinking about sneaking out after dark. We can
look after our selves, I mean we’re still alive right?”
“Right, but if we do, do that, we would have to do I after the
night medication, or they would notice that we were gone.”
“Oh, right. That would be fine, right? We don’t take as many pill
as we use to.” Stammered Drake. “What ever we are going to do, it will have to
wait. We’re are Birchstone now.” Clair said, pushing the door open.
So yeah. Thats Chapter One!
